The port town of Golfito is located in Puntarenas Province on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, near the border of Panama. The town lies on a narrow strip of land between the eponymous bay and a hill and consists of two parts, the town proper and shopping area to the south, and a residential area near the port.
The town backs onto pristine rainforest where there are some 200 species of tress and shrubs. The vegetation attracts a numerous variety of birds and mammals such as raccoons, monkeys, squirrels and coati. There are poison arrow frogs, huge iguanas and countless other reptile and insect species in this protected area.
